Dermal fillers are popular injectable cosmetics that can be used to diminish the signs of aging and refine and volumize facial features. With a wide range of formulations and uses, these versatile fillers have become indispensable for those in the know. Everyone wants smoother skin, more luscious lips, and defined contours – and it’s all possible with dermal fillers.

These days, it seems you can get dermal filler injections just about anywhere – but that certainly doesn’t mean you should. Although non-surgical, minimally invasive, and fast, these are still medical procedures that should only be injected by professionally-trained, experienced experts. We offer the latest, most effective injectable cosmetics administered by master injectors and industry trainers. If you want expert results, go with an expert. How do Dermal Fillers Work?

There are a dizzying number of dermal fillers available in Canada, and multitudes more worldwide. What they all have in common is that they work to fortify the natural cellular processes in the dermis, the deepest layer of our skin. Dermal fillers support and stimulate the components that form the building blocks of this layer, which include:

  • Hyaluronic acid, which keeps our skin hydrated and supports healthy cellular function
  • Collagen, the protein fibres that keep our skin firm and tight
  • Elastin, which allows our skin to “snap back”(1)

What makes each type of dermal filler different is how they supplement each of these essential components.  Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers add to the body’s own supply of hyaluronic acid. HA binds to water molecules present in the dermis until it’s reached up to 1000x its size, giving skin a boost of volume and a dewy glow. Unlike the HA that our body produces naturally, the HA in fillers is engineered to be longer-lasting and has specific properties that make it appropriate for different uses.

These properties determine how the filler performs under the skin after injection:

  • Viscosity: How “gooey” the filler is, and the extent to which it can be moulded
  • Elasticity: How flexible the filler is, and its ability to “snap back” into shape after movement or pressure
  • Cohesivity: How the filler stands up to pressure while keeping its shape

That means that thicker firmer varieties can fill in deep creases and wrinkles or effectively add long-lasting volume to cheeks. And, more elastic, viscous HA fillers can fill in fine lines and wrinkles while still allowing natural movement, making them ideal for fine lines such as smoker’s lines around the mouth.(2)

Other fillers contain ingredients that ramp up the dermis’ natural production of collagen for firmer skin and additional tissue volume. These are called bio-stimulatory fillers. Depending on the areas you wish to treat, and your aesthetic goals, there may be one, or a combination of, dermal fillers that are perfectly suited to your needs.

What Areas Can be Treated with Dermal Fillers?

Cheekbones

Adding volume to the cheeks not only turns back the clock or gives the face more defined contours, but it can also give the lower face a subtle lift, which can be optimal for those beginning to fret about jowls.

Undereye

A hollow under-eye area, also referred to as the tear trough, can benefit from a touch of filler. This is an extremely delicate area of the face. So, it’s essential to make sure that the right hyaluronic acid is chosen and masterfully injected to prevent undue swelling. This is one of the most common procedures in our clinics.

Lips

Who doesn’t want fuller, more curvaceous lips? The lips are a vital element in the beauty and harmony of the face. Their volume can be balanced with the other facial features and the natural shape subtly enhanced – or not! Many of our patients enjoy a high-impact voluptuous pout that stops traffic.

Light to Deep Lines and Wrinkles

Horizontal lines across the forehead, marionette lines, smoker’s lines, glabellar lines… forget about them. There’s a dermal filler specially designed for each of these concerns.

Add Prominence or Smooth Contours

Dermal fillers can be added strategically to the bridge and tip of the nose in what’s often called a non-surgical nose job. This can temporarily smooth the line of the nose or give a subtle upturn to a drooping tip for a cuter, more feminine nasal appearance. Patients troubled by a weak chin or lack of jawline definition can also benefit from the addition of filler in these areas.

HA Fillers

Amalian

Amalian dermal fillers are our go-to for the very best in HA injectables.

This line of fillers has a broad assortment of specially formulated injectables, each suited to particular areas of the face. There’s an Amalian filler for every concern, including lips, tear troughs, liquid facelifts, non-surgical nose jobs, the Barbie facelift, and creases on the neck, among others. Amalian is a German-manufactured filler, so patients can count on precision and quality from beginning to end. It’s used in over 40 different countries, and injectors worldwide choose Amalian for the exact control this product offers, allowing them to place the filler strategically and model results post-injection. Amalian has been in use for over 15 years, during which there have been no recalls due to exacting quality standards. And, this injectable has no animal-derived ingredients and features minimal risk of swelling after injection, so you can enjoy beautiful results right away.

Revanesse

Revanesse is a powerful filler that comes in two formulations: Revanesse Versa for moderate to severe facial wrinkles, and Revanesse Lips for smoother, fuller volume.

Restylane

Restylane is designed to mimic the natural hyaluronic acid that occurs in your body to plump and fill in creases, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a fuller, healthier-looking face. Like Amalian, Restylane comes in a full line of formulations, each designed to treat specific concerns. It’s an excellent non-surgical way to look hydrated and refreshed.

Perlane

Like Restylane, Perlane is also made by Galderma. And, if you haven’t heard about Perlane in a while, that’s because it’s been rebranded as Restylane Lyft!  This HA filler is strong enough to tackle the deep wrinkles, laugh lines, and frown lines that other treatments can’t target. Perlane is so powerful it is also used to contour and enhance the jawline and cheeks.

Teosyal

Teosyal is an HA dermal filler that is safe for use wherever wrinkles appear. Teosyal’s non-animal product line of dermal fillers can enhance the skin quality and beauty of everyone.

Bio-Stimulatory Fillers

Radiesse

Radiesse contains biocompatible microspheres of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHa), a form of calcium that’s similar to that in our bones. These microspheres are suspended in a smooth gel that offers instant volume. As the gel is absorbed, the body responds to the microspheres by initiating the production of collagen for firmer volume that can last up to two years.

Bellafill

Bellafill is a semi-eternal dermal filler that fills and contours nasolabial folds (smile lines). Unlike other dermal fillers, Bellafill does not absorb into the body, meaning results are immediate and long-lasting. It is also an ideal treatment for pockmarks and deep skin scars and indentations in both men and women.

Sculptra

Sculptra is another long-lasting effective way to restore volume and correct surface irregularities. This popular filler contains poly-L-lactic acid which stimulates collagen growth for firmer, lifted cheeks, a more prominent chin, or a contoured nose. Sculptra is also a popular way to diminish the appearance of cellulite, correct hip dips, or get a rounder butt without surgery.

Procedures and Technique

Dermal fillers are fast, relatively painless, and incredibly versatile. As a result, injectors have developed specialized injection techniques for addressing the most common cosmetic concerns. When you arrive for your injection appointment, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable, and stay comfortable by applying a topical numbing cream to the treatment areas. Once it takes effect, your injector will apply the dermal fillers at various depths beneath the skin. They’ll apply controlled pressure to the syringe’s plunger and carefully withdraw the needle in strategic intervals to ensure that the product is placed in the correct location, shape, and amount.

Some of the popular dermal filler techniques we perform include:

  • Russian Lip Technique: The ultimate for a sexy pout, with a dramatic increase in fullness and height.
  • Jawline Contouring: Add definition and smooth angles for a more sculpted appearance
  • Nefertiti Lift: Neuromodulators like Dysport are used for a smoother, longer, more slender-looking neck
  • Five Point Facelift: Strategic injections at 5 points on each side of the face address the cheeks, eye area, lines around the mouth, and create an overall lift for a rejuvenated appearance
  • Eyebrow Lift: Forehead muscles are targeted with neuromodulators, and volume is adjusted with fillers so that sagging brows are lifted
  • Liquid Facelift: This non-surgical treatment uses strategic injections to address the signs of aging and create an overall lift for facial tissues
  • Barbie Facelift: This treatment uses injectables on the upper third of the face to lift the eyes and refresh the appearance for a more energetic, youthful expression

Once your injector has finished, so have you! There’s no downtime or recovery required from dermal fillers, so you’ll be free to go about your day and look forward to your results.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Dermal fillers are frequently combined with Botulinum Toxin injectables, such as Dysport. Unlike dermal fillers, these are neuromodulators, which prevent the movement of muscles that cause wrinkles and other signs of aging to appear. They are also used to perform the popular lip flip for the appearance of a larger upper lip. When placed in the upper face, they allow us to delay the need for a forehead and temple lift.
