Dysport
Dysport is an injectable neuromodulator that drastically reduces the appearance of frown lines, wrinkles, and fine lines around the brows and eyes. The treatment blocks the neurotransmitters responsible for muscle movements to reduce repetitive contractions that create facial lines and wrinkles. Dysport contains botulinum and is similar to Botox to help you achieve smoother, more youthful skin. (1) We can improve signs of facial aging without incisions or the risk of anesthesia.

About Dysport
While emotions like happiness, sadness, and fear are important to feel and express, wearing the lines and wrinkles from smiling or frowning is less desirable. Most people develop frown lines as they age. For some people, frown lines are more prominent and detract from the overall appearance of their face. Frown lines can also make you appear older than you are. As an injectable dermal filler, Dysport does wonders to erase frown lines and renew your face.
Dysport was formulated more than 15 years ago in an advanced clinical setting and is currently approved for use in 23 different countries (2) around the globe for the targeted treatment of glabellar lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles in the neck and eye area. Dysport is derived from the botulinum toxin type A– a neurotoxin approved for the temporary paralysis of targeted muscles.
The Science of Facial Aging
The technical name for the wrinkles that are commonly referred to as “frown lines” is glabellar lines. This term refers to wrinkles that appear between a person’s eyebrows. Although these vertical wrinkles are most commonly caused by aging and the contortion of the face when making facial expressions, there are several factors that can contribute to the appearance of glabellar lines, and Dysport can reverse their effects. These factors include:
- Lifestyle: Smoking increases the likelihood of developing frown lines at an early age and can worsen existing frown lines. Smoking reduces the amount of natural collagen your body is able to produce. Collagen is a protein that keeps the skin firm and youthful.
- Prolonged Sun Exposure: While smoking depletes your body’s collagen supply, too much UV light can damage the collagen that is already present in your delicate skin. UV radiation is responsible for up to 80% of facial aging from extrinsic factors. (3) Damaged collagen also reduces the amount and quality of new collagen that is produced, resulting in the appearance of dark spots and sun damage becoming more apparent.
- Aging: As you age, the collagen in your skin naturally decreases, and your hormone levels change. Both can result in fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older than you are.

If you would like to treat more than one condition, we can discuss a combination of injectables to help you achieve your desired look. We will need to discuss your expectations and medical history in depth. Dysport contains lidocaine, and if you have a lidocaine allergy we can recommend an alternative to help you achieve your desired look. How to Prepare for a Dysport Treatment
To prepare for your treatment, you will need to:
- Stop taking blood thinners.
- Stop drinking 24 hours before and after your treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure.
- Wear sunscreen.
- Take good care of your skin.
- Avoid any harsh chemical peels or facial treatments before your appointment.
You will also need to arrive with a clean face. Do not wear makeup or skincare products to your appointment.
Dysport Procedure
During your treatment, we may apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to reduce any discomfort for the very small injection needles. We will use a thin, delicate needle to inject the treatment beneath your skin. Most patients do not report any pain or discomfort. The treatment usually takes a brief 10-20 minutes. However, the duration of time between the treatment and results varies depending on the patient and treatment area. Afterward, the patient can go about their day without recovery time. Although we may recommend more than one Dysport treatment to help you meet your goals, we recommend that you do not exceed more than one treatment every 90 days.

Recovery & Results
Patients should avoid lying down or rubbing the treatment area for at least 12 hours, as this can cause migration of the solution outside the treatment area. After one administration of Dysport, your frown lines will disappear and the injection will prevent new lines from forming. In general, patients can expect to see results 24-72 hours after treatment. You can expect to enjoy smoother, wrinkle-free brows or eyes for as long as 9-12 months. Dysport is fantastic at reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. However, it is a temporary dermal filler and your body will eventually absorb it. When you need a touch-up, simply schedule an appointment for another treatment at New You.

FAQ
No, Dysport will not hurt. We will use topical anesthesia for your comfort and you can return home immediately. The solution itself will also contain lidocaine, a popular numbing agent.
Dysport may cause some minor side effects depending on the patient and their medical history. Side effects may include mild swelling, bruising, redness, or tenderness in the treatment area. Some patients also reported minor headaches and pain at the injection site, sore throat, upper respiratory infection, and sinus infection.
Dysport is made of botulinum toxin, a protein that researchers have studied since the 1970s. Injectors are knowledgeable about how much to administer into each facial muscle. Before discovering the cosmetic uses for botulinum toxin, they found that it could treat medical conditions like hyperhidrosis, migraines, muscle spasm disorders, and more.
The number of Dysport injections you need will depend on your aesthetic goals and your skin type. During your consultation, we can discuss the best treatment plan for your needs.
Dysport and Botox contain the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin, but manufacturers subject them to a different purification process. Also, Dysport can sustain results for up to 5 months, whereas Botox injections typically maintain results for only 3 to 4 months.
